Urinary tract infections, or UTIs for short, are common and often recurring in women, due to a short urethra and its closeness to the anus and vagina. And if you’ve ever dealt with that telltale burning sensation or constant urge to pee, you know the urgency for relief is real. Thankfully, holistic remedies can offer gentle yet effective relief at any age.

Stay Hydrated
One of the easiest and most effective ways to help prevent UTIs is by staying well-hydrated.Drinking enough water keeps your urinary system working efficiently, flushing out waste while preserving essential nutrients and electrolytes, several studies suggest. It also dilutes your urine and helps it move quickly through the tract, making it harder for bacteria to take hold and cause infection. While hydration needs may vary from person to person, a good general target is 6 to 8 glasses of water per day.

Drink Cranberry Juice
Cranberry juice isn’t just a nostalgic fridge staple—it’s also one of the most talked-about natural go-tos for preventing UTIs. What makes cranberries so special is that they’re loaded with potent plant compounds like D-mannose, hippuric acid, and anthocyanins that help keep bacteria from sticking to the walls of the urinary tract. In simple terms, less sticking means less chance for an infection to occur.

A 2020 study that assessed the protective effects of cranberry juice in UTIs validated the effectiveness of cranberry products owing to their antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. Some people may benefit from drinking about 400 mL of cranberry juice with at least 25% cranberry content daily, but more research is still needed to confirm the most effective dose.

Take Green Tea
Derived from the leaves of the Camellia sinensis plant, green tea is appreciated for its multiple cardiovascular health-promoting, cholesterol-reducing, and chemopreventive properties. Additionally, it is rich in polyphenols—plant compounds renowned for their natural antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory benefits. One standout compound, epigallocatechin (EGC), has shown promising antibacterial activity against UTI-causing E. coli in laboratory studies.

Current evidence suggests that even one cup or 240 mL of brewed green tea per day may provide enough EGC, a key antimicrobial catechin, to reach urinary concentrations that can inhibit the growth of E. coli.

Use Probiotics
Recent research indicates that probiotics, especially Lactobacillus strains, may reduce the risk of recurrent urinary tract infections (UTIs), particularly in women with a history of frequent infections. They exert their effects by blocking harmful bacteria, producing antibacterial hydrogen peroxide, and lowering urine pH to create an unfriendly environment for pathogens.
A 2024 study involving premenopausal women found that women receiving vaginal or combined probiotics experienced fewer UTI episodes and a longer time to first recurrence, with the interventions being well tolerated and no serious adverse events reported.

Urinate When Needed
Promptly urinating when the urge arises can aid in both UTI prevention and treatment. This is because frequent urination helps flush bacteria from the urinary tract and reduces their contact time with tract cells, lowering the risk of infection.

Some natural sources of D-mannose that can support urinary tract health include fruits like apples, grapes, watermelon, peaches, mangoes, oranges, and blueberries — vegetables such as cabbage, tomatoes, green beans, and soybeans — and legumes like kidney beans. Other sources are aloe vera, egg whites, baker’s yeast, and coffee.”
