If fans recall, the performance marked Beyonce as the first black woman to headline the festival. An accomplishment, of which she chose to celebrate by centering her performance around the history and culture of Historically Black Colleges & Universities (HBCUs).
As an HBCU graduate, the documentary was refreshing and uplifting. Homecoming celebrations at HBCUs are an important time of the year, of which black men and women are able to gather and showcase our pride in our culture and history. Beyonce took that sense of pride to the next level when she decided to highlight HBCUs on the biggest festival stage in America.
With “Homecoming,” Beyonce shows fans how challenging it was to create this performance. From training to rehearsal sessions to strict diets – she proves exactly why she is one of the greatest entertainers of our time. She puts in the work ethic, she does her research and she does it all while balancing being a mother and wife.
In the documentary, Beyonce reveals that she suffered serious complications during her pregnancy with twins Rumi and Sir, which resulted in an emergency C-section. With drastic changes to her body and infant twins, Beyonce pushed through rigorous training for eight months to execute her performance. There were moments where she questioned whether she’d be able to pull through.
With “Homecoming,” fans are not only able to relive her historical performance, but also learn more about HBCU culture and be inspired by the work ethic and dedication that encompasses a phenomenal woman.
