An afternoon of testing the best wines in the region with our closest girlfriends is pretty much as close to heaven as one can get. Especially if you love wine as much as our loved ones do.
And what’s even better is that you don’t necessarily need to hop on a plane to Italy to experience the grape-filled goodness. There are plenty of wineries close to home that can provide you and the ladies with the perfect day trip.
From the Cabernet Sauvignons of Napa Valley to the Rieslings of New York’s Finger Lakes, we’ve culled a short list of top vineyards in the US for an amazing ladies’ day out. Ready to raise a glass? Ahead find a few of our favorite vineyards.
Napa Valley, California
One of the most sought-after bottlings in Napa Valley, Opus One was launched as a New World-Old World partnership between Baron Philippe de Rothschild of Château Mouton Rothschild (Bordeaux), and Robert Mondavi, aimed to create a single Bordeaux style blend based upon Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon. It is the vineyard that put Napa Valley on the map and is definitely well worth a visit if you are in the area. Bonus: They’re also home to the limousine wine tour, if that is your sort of thing.
Texas Hill Country, TX
Infamous as the wine that has been served in the White House to multiple presidents as well as at several James Beard dinners, this winery is a must if you find yourself in the Lone Star state. It’s also just a great region to visit in general. There are 46 wineries between Austin and New Braunfels and the weather makes DIY wine tours possible to achieve year-round.
Santa Barbara County, CA
One of the pioneers of Santa Barbara’s modern wine renaissance, Brander makes notable red wines but put itself on the map with its Sauvignon Blancs, which are produced here in at least five bottlings and blends. What’s even more magnificent is that the tasting room offers a shady courtyard to sit back and take in the scenery. It is just one of many stunning wineries in Santa Barbara County. We highly recommend booking a driver and cruising them all.
Finger Lakes, NY
Last but certainly not least is the covetable Finger Lakes region. Hailed as the birthplace of East Coast winemaking, Dr. Frank’s top-tier skills have been credited with elevating the New York wine industry from mediocrity to a level that commands world attention. In fact, the entire region is a powerhouse of top sommeliers with over 100 wineries in the area. We recommend starting that day at the famous gorges at Watkins Glen State Park in the morning, and then heading to the incredibly esteemed Dr. Konstantin Frank Wine Cellars in the afternoon before taking a tour of the rest of the vineyards.
Anderson Valley, CA
Since summer is officially in full swing (and rosé is officially the drink of summer!), we couldn’t complete this article without sharing our favorite place to enjoy one of the most delicious rosés in the region. What’s more is that Pennyroyal also doubles as a dairy—which means you can nosh on Pennyroyal’s housemade Laychee cheese alongside your glass of rosé—taking the whole wine-and-cheese party thing to a completely new level.
