2019 has been a great year for actress Regina King. In February, she received her first Academy Award for her supporting role in If Beale Street Could Talk, and shortly after announced a multi-year first-look deal with Netflix.
Under her partnership with Netflix, King will produce a series of content for the network via her production company, Royal Ties. The best part, her sister, Reina King will serve as the head of production.
King landing this production deal, means more opportunities for women, and more Strong Black Leads. She has proven her commitment to the advancement of women in Hollywood, and has gone as far as to promise to hire more women over the next few years, challenging fellow producers to do the same.
“I’m going to use my platform right now to say in the next two years, everything that I produce, I am making a vow – and it’s going to be tough – to make sure that everything that I produce is 50% women.”
This deal with Netflix will serve as the perfect opportunity for King to put those promises into action, and we’re excited that she has the platform to do so. She is extremely talented and has been showcasing her talent since she first appeared on television series “227,” more than 30 years ago. We have no doubt that the stories she’ll tell will directly reflect everyday people.
“Regina King is a multi-faceted talent both behind and in front of the camera. She’s been a trailblazer for years, with boundless creativity and impeccable taste in projects, and we couldn’t be more thrilled that she will bring her formidable talents to Netflix,” said Ted Sarandos, Netflix’s Chief Content Officer.
We look forward to seeing the first film or series King plans to develop – either way – we’ll be supporting.
