The 5 Best Fall Destinations Just Outside NYC

Share

As the long days of summer are finally coming to an end, we’re setting our sights on the perfect places to admire the fall foliage. New York City might be steamy through August, but autumn is the most majestical time of year to take a quick trek north.

From sculpture gardens to stunning castles, there’s no shortage of places to visit for a short weekend trip. Grab a car or hop on the train and take in the beauty the Northeast has to offer. We promise you won’t be disappointed.

New Paltz, NY

If you’re looking for a true getaway, I highly recommend Mohonk Mountain House. This lakeside secluded sanctuary has some of the most stunning views I’ve ever seen. This resort is set in a Victorian castle on the Shawangunk Ridge in Ulster County. It’s the perfect place to unwind the daily grind and soak up the incredible scenery.

Stowe, VT

Fall foliage is king in Vermont – and the state actually has the highest percentage of maple trees in the US, which is reason enough to run away for a weekend. It’s the perfect place to rent a chic chalet, take a nature walk, and sip hot toddies over an open fire.

Beacon, NY

Two of my favorite art attractions lie in this little town, just an hour-and-a-half train (or car) ride from Manhattan. Visit Dia: Beacon for a healthy heaping of contemporary art or take a ride to Storm King to explore the 500-acre large-scale sculpture garden amongst the rolling hills.

Catskills, NY

Home to some of New York’s most charming villages, this mountainous region was made infamous by the Woodstock festival. Now it’s the place where creative types escape the concrete jungle to browse record stores, eat farm-to-table fare, and shop for local pottery. Stay in an expertly-designed tiny house or select from one of the many chic boutiques around.

New Canaan, CT

A true design-lovers mecca, Philip Johnson’s Glass House is just an hour from the city, and a sight to be seen. Stroll around the 47-acre estate and take in the sights from this state-of-the-art totally groundbreaking all-glass home. While you’re at it, hop over to Grace Farms, which is a cultural center by Pritzer Prize-winning Japanese architecture firm SANAA for total art immersion.

There are so many gorgeous places to discover just outside the city. But fall is without a doubt the best time to appreciate the changing seasons. So grab a car, grab your loved ones, and just head north.
