According to a recent article by Fortune, the fashion resale market is currently exploding–growing 21 times faster than the retail market over the past three years and is projected to grow to nearly 1.5 times the size of fast fashion retailers (such as Zara and H&M) within the next 10 years. Why has the industry been experiencing such incredible growth? Two main reasons. One because shoppers are able to get high-quality luxury items for less; and two, because they are beginning to become far more environmentally conscious.
Nécessité founder Erica Reid has created an online shop called The Closet to share in fashion’s sustainability mission by allowing shoppers access to her closet and donating a portion of the proceeds to the charities she supports on the philanthropic area of nécessité. Can you tell us a little more about The Closet? What is it?
The Closet gives shoppers exclusive access to shop pieces from my personal closet and to add into their closet. These are items I have purchased and prefer to share rather than keep (consider it my personal Marie Kondo!). Most of these items have been worn or still have tags still on them or are in their original boxes. We price at different price points, and carry luxury designers such as Off-White, YSL, Tom Ford, Chanel, Supreme, Louis Vuitton, as well as some less familiar designers. From jewelry, shoes, bags, accessories, coats, jackets, and dresses we carry just about everything in The Closet.

I started it because a lot of women’s shelters and places in Africa where I was previously donating to were not able to make use of some of the products, so I figured, why not sell them myself and donate the proceeds to charity?
Why is The Closet special to you?
The closet allows us to continue to give back by donating proceeds directly to the selected charities we support. More information about these charities can be found in Nécessité’s Philanthropic area.
What do you want people to know about The Closet?
The Closet is cared for with respect. The items are authentic pieces that come directly from my closet. Also, the prices are typically lower than other consignment places (unless it’s a collectible item like the Supreme x Louis Vuitton collection). Your purchases help donate proceeds to charity.
