Why Sustainability In Fashion Is So Important

Chances are you’ve heard the phrase thrown around quite a bit. Sustainability has quickly become one of the most-talked topics around town. But what role does the fashion industry play? And how can we work together to fight for a better world? Read on to find out.

The Amazon rainforest is on fire, tiny-but-mighty activist Greta Thunberg is making waves with her global awareness efforts, and a funeral was staged during LFW to draw attention to the fashion industry’s contribution to the global warming issue. But what does it all mean? And how can we join the fight?

Believe it or not the fashion industry is actually a pretty big contributor to sustainability issues. In fact, “fast fashion” itself is putting the future of our planet at risk. Clothing cheaply made to meet the demands of the latest fleeting trends are just adding more waste into our environment. The one and done factor rings oh so true. But there are easy ways that you can combat waste and help the sustainability effort—and it all boils down to what you buy, how you buy, and why.

Quality is key.

This should come unsaid, but always opt for quality over quantity. Pay close attention, not only to the quality of the garments, but also the entire supply chain, production processes, and product afterlife.

Ask the right questions.

When deciding what product to buy, there’s a few very important questions you should be asking yourself. Was this fabric made to last? What is it made from? Is it sustainable or is it made from textiles that can be reused and recycled? What is the environmental impact that was likely caused from this fabric production?

Buy less.

It’s a difficult ask to people who love shopping as much as I do, but it’s important to focus more on acquiring investment pieces rather than the latest trends. Invest in key essentials that can stand the test of time, no matter what is currently trending on the runway. Look for pieces that are made of materials and textiles that can be worn for seasons to come. Choose garments that were engineered to last longer.

Contribute to the resale market.

The resale industry has been booming for good reason—it’s one of the best ways to contribute to sustainable fashion efforts. Shop designer duds that have been previously loved and passed down to decrease the amount of fashion waste you’re contributing to, and score super covetable pieces at a reduced rate. If that’s not a win-win situation, I don’t  know what is.
