Food allergies are on the rise. We are becoming more allergic and more and more sensitive to food day by day. There was a time when it was unheard of. I was once the only person in my classroom or at the table amongst my friends allergic or aware of my food sensitivities. Nowadays, it is the norm, I believe.
When I was on this journey with my children over 20 years ago, after already living years with my food allergies, there were so many foods that we had to avoid, and it was hard to get food alternatives in their place. Not anymore.
Here are some plant-based non-dairy cheese alternatives I share to help the yummy factor to that homemade pizza or grilled cheese sandwich. I like them because they are not nut-based cheese, and they also really melt and taste good.
While I have been plant-based and vegan since the 90s, these products help with some of my recipes, and they make the biggest difference in helping with some of our food allergies and food sensitivities.
Follow Your Heart Non-Dairy Cheese:
I really like their products. I have used them for over 15 years and counting. I love how their cheeses melt. And I mean, melts. It really does melt and taste good. This brand carried us through all our Friday night pizza nights and more. This is the block of cheese I used. I used a shredder, but now they have it already shredded. So find which one you like, and that speaks to you. They make cheese that crumbles, shreds, and that slices.
Good Planet Foods Non-Dairy Cheese:
I discovered this cheese from one of the owners a few years ago. It tastes great, and I truly use it and love it as much as Follow Your Heart. It melts, making you never feel like you were consuming dairy. They too make a variety of products.
If you are new to food allergies or caring for someone new to them, making a switch can feel daunting at times, but my advice is to stay positive. It is not the end of the world. It is an adjustment. It may seem like it is an inconvenience, but it is part of the journey we are given for whatever reason. Help educate those in your inner circle, even young children. It can help make a safe difference. Food allergies are real and serious. Remember, anyone without them cannot relate; therefore, they may not truly understand your situation or your concerns with feeling like a food cop.
Do what you have to do to protect yourself and your loved ones for being safe and happy!
