Salutogenesis: What It Is, and What It Does

While seeking medical help when unwell is common, reflecting on the factors that sustain good health is a practice frequently overlooked. Western medicine primarily addresses illnesses, whereas one holistic concept directs attention to proactive health factors that promote overall well-being.

What it is

Salutogenesis is a concept developed by medical sociologist Aaron Antonovsky in 1979, and it focuses on the factors that contribute to human health and well-being rather than solely on the origins of disease. Salutogenesis is derived from the Latin word “Salus,” meaning health, and the Greek word “genesis,” meaning origin.

The core idea of salutogenesis is to understand and promote the factors that support health, resilience, and a sense of well-being in individuals and communities. According to Antonovsky, stressors are an inevitable part of life. Therefore, developing a positive approach to stressful life experiences can significantly improve outcomes. Also, the innate ability to create and maintain health in every man and well-being — regardless of adversity.

Salutogenesis is based on two major concepts:

The Sense of Coherence: This is the ability to effectively manage the resources you have to cope with the innumerable stressors of life. This perspective interprets life as comprehensible, manageable, and meaningful.

General Resistance Resources (GRRs): These are the material, biological, and psychosocial factors that make it easier for you to live a stable, organized, and meaningful life. Typical GRRs are:

  • Physical such as money, housing, clothing, power, and healthy behaviors
  • Cognitive such as knowledge, experience, education, and intelligence
  • Interpersonal relations, which include social support and interactions
  • Macrosocial, including culture and religion

How it works

Salutogenesis encourages individuals to understand the various factors influencing their health. This fosters a sense of clarity and comprehension to make informed decisions about well-being.

By breaking down challenges into manageable components, you develop a sense of control over your circumstances, leading to a positive, purpose-driven outlook on health.
