Dear nécessité,
My love, how are you doing? Are you enjoying summer? Are you nurturing yourself and spoiling yourself rotten? I am! I love me so much and have always made sure I was a priority. I happily date myself, and I love to do so. To love properly, you must love self-first.
Otherwise, it is only spending lust time with someone else. Love is love. It is so beautiful and free. Do you love you? How you treat others and your actions can help you answer that question honestly.
It is the last few weeks of August, and soon, we will enter a new season, out with the old and in with the new. Are you looking for something to do and want to explore before summer ends? A place to relax but be active if you desire and take in some of GOD’s beauty? I suggest perhaps trying Martha’s Vineyard. It is an island located south of Cape Cod in Massachusetts, USA. It’s known for its picturesque landscapes, quaint towns, historic sites, and popular tourist attractions. The air is so fresh. It felt crisp, clean, and smooth. Let me be open and honest before we go deeper here.
It was the hardest place I have ever been to get a healthy meal that is accommodating for being plant-based, gluten-free, and with food allergies and food sensitivities. I thought Paris was tricky-WRONG! Now, welcome aboard if you are a lobster roll, gluten, fried, or dairy eater. This is a haven for those types of eaters. But for me, food in a restaurant was not on my side. My friend and I must have gone to about five restaurants in 15 minutes looking for a place to eat, and no one could offer anything or make anything.
No joke. This was the first I had ever experienced. Cross-contamination, along with menu selections, was the issue. I was so surprised to be in America and unable to eat in this century. Things will be different in 1-5 years. Thank you to this lovely woman whom we encountered in a preferred foods place, where they offered nothing safe to eat, but she did suggest a place to eat called,
The Pawnee House:
A former hotel in the 1800s, this husband-and-wife duo (Debbie and Alex) took over the lease in January 2020 and opened in August 2020. Debbie is the chef, and Alex greets you at the door. She made it possible to provide me with daily food that would sustain me while on the island. Too bad lunch is not offered here; they open at 430 (so late lunch). The Brussels sprouts and potatoes were right on time. They do offer some plant-based, vegan, gluten-free options, in addition to some animal products on their menu. Choose what works for you. I suggest making reservations.
Thank you, Chef Debbie, and thank you, Pawnee House. It is located in Oak Bluffs—the Pawnee House 20H Kennebec Ave. 508.338.2770.
A few other special features of Martha’s Vineyard:
Geography:
Martha’s Vineyard is an island covering about 100 square miles (260 square kilometers) in area.
Towns:
The island is home to several charming towns, each with its own character. (Similar to how The Hamptons are as well). These include Edgartown, Oak Bluffs, Vineyard Haven, West Tisbury, and Chilmark. Each town is unique to its specific area.
Lighthouses:
The island has several historic lighthouses, such as Edgartown Lighthouse and Gay Head Lighthouse. These lighthouses not only guide ships but also serve as popular tourist attractions. You can walk up closer and take photos. Very pretty.
Cultural Attractions:
Martha’s Vineyard has a rich cultural scene with art galleries, museums, and theaters. The Martha’s Vineyard Film Festival and the Martha’s Vineyard African American Film Festival are notable events. Currently, they premiered “Ladies First,” now premiering on Netflix, Al Roker’s film on black Farmers, and “Invisible Beauty” with Bethann Hardison featuring Zendaya, and Naomi Campbell, all a must-see.
Inkwell:
The Oak Bluffs area is famous for Inkwell Beach (the movie Inkwell is real) and its colorful and whimsical Victorian-style cottages known as the “Gingerbread Cottages.” They are so cute and charming, like doll houses.
Water Activities:
The island is a haven for water-based activities like sailing, kayaking, paddleboarding, and fishing.
Nature:
Much nature here. So beautiful and serene. Great to walk amongst the water landscape and inhale the fresh air or ride a bike while taking it all in. Beautiful green trees. GOD painted a very picturesque photo here in MV.
Ferries/Airline Travel:
Accessible by ferry as well as certain airlines. Martha’s Vineyard is a favorite summer getaway for those seeking a relaxing and scenic escape.
Transportation on the Island:
Your Taxi Martha’s Vineyard 508.693.0003 24-Hour Service, His price was the best on the island I discovered.
Hotel:
Faraway 23 Kelley Street Edgartown Super cute, clean, great, walkable location.
Shopping:
Many simple boutiques, art galleries, and shops in various towns. You can find everything from clothing and jewelry to local crafts and antiques. No Madison Avenue or Rodeo Drive here. Complete opposite.
Martha’s Vineyard is known for its relaxed atmosphere, natural beauty, and the charm of its towns and landscapes. It’s a popular destination for tourists seeking a quintessential New England experience. I really loved and appreciated how people mix and mingle here. I am so thankful I was able to manage physically because each day is a different day.
I have not been on a bike, but I do hope I can do that in the Vineyard next summer with a huge smile and no discomfort. Martha’s Vineyard offers a wide range of activities and attractions for visitors, whether you’re interested in outdoor adventures or being cozy inside with family and friends.
Remember that the island’s activities can vary based on the season, so it’s a good idea to check ahead for any specific events or attractions you’re interested in during your visit, and of course, check on the weather!
Enjoy and have fun the remaining part of summer.
